Beers at Sauce Brewing Co in Marrickville.

Marrickville breweries you should visit schooner or later

Sydney’s Inner West has become a hotbed for breweries, with dozens opening their doors across Newtown, St Peters, Camperdown and, especially, Marrickville in recent years. We’ve always lived in the area and have checked many of them out.

After spending three years living in Marrickville, we made it around to almost all of them. (But we’re sure we’ll get to the newer ones soon!)

Best Marrickville Breweries

Whenever we have guests visiting from out of town, or are just looking to hang out for the afternoon, these are our go-to breweries in Marrickville. Good vibes, good food and, of course, good beer all earn them spots in our top three.

Sauce Brewing Co

Address: 1a Mitchell Street, Marrickville
Opening hours: Wednesday and Thursday – 4pm-9pm; Friday and Saturday – 11:30am–10pm; Sunday – 11:30am–9pm
Food available: Yes (Rotating food trucks)
Website: https://sauce.beer/

Our favourite spot in Marrickville, Sauce Brewing Co ticks all the boxes. There’s a sunny beer garden, a nice variety of beers on tap, a rotating food truck (so you get something new each time) and an all around good vibe. The outdoor seating area is pretty big and does have large tables, so it’s our go-to if we’re with a large group. Many of our friends have young kids, and they like coming here because it’s quite pram-friendly, too. There’s both seats in the sun or under cover, which is ideal on a super sunny or a questionably cloudy day.

When it comes to drinks, there are some staples that are always on tap along with some specials. We’re more into the funky flavours when it comes to beers and there’s usually at least one or two on offer that fits the bill.

Wildflower Brewing & Blending

Address: 11-13 Brompton Street, Marrickville
Opening hours: Thursday – 4pm-10pm; Friday and Saturday – 12pm-10pm; Sunday – 12pm-6pm
Food available: Yes
Website: https://wildflowerbeer.com/

If you’re a bit torn between sipping on wine or downing a beer, this spot is for you. A bit tucked away down a quiet street, Wildflower Brewing & Blending feels a bit more like a Hunter Valley winery than a Marrickville brewery. The tasting room has a barn-like atmosphere that’s lined with wooden barrels. There is an outdoor area here too, but the best atmosphere is inside.

The name “Wildflower”? Well, that stems from the beer-making process here. The team uses yeasts and bacteria from flowers native to New South Wales to ferment the drinks. And the result is just lovely and makes our favourite beers of all the breweries listed on this page. Everything here tastes fresh and botanical.

Mixtape Brewing and Bar

Address: 142A Victoria Road, Marrickville
Opening hours: Wednesday – 4pm-10pm; Thursday – 12pm-10pm; Friday and Saturday – 12pm-Midnight; Sunday – 12pm-10pm
Food available: Yes
Website: https://www.mixtapebrewing.com.au/

A relative newcomer, Mixtape has only been open since 2022. And judging by how busy it’s been every time we’ve visited, it seems we’re not the only people who like it here. It’s a large, open space that somehow still manages to feel a bit like you’re just hanging out in a friend’s garage on a Sunday afternoon.

There’s 18 taps here, with a good chunk of them serving up Mixtape’s own brews alongside some of the best of what’s available elsewhere. (There’s also almost always a sour on tap which is a bit win for us.) If you’re looking for a bite to eat, there’s also an onsite kitchen cooking up everything from pizza to falafel to dumplings.

Which Marrickville breweries serve food?

Just about all of them! Eight of the nine breweries in Marrickville serve food. A few of them, including Batch and Sauce, have rotating food trucks instead of an on-site kitchen, but they are there regularly. Here’s what you can get at each of these spots:

Dog friendly Marrickville breweries

Like many Inner West watering holes, plenty of Marrickville breweries are dog friendly (and very much welcome by patrons like ourselves who froth over all the local dogs). Here’s where you can bring your dog with you:

  • Batch Brewing Company
  • The Bob Hawke Beer and Leisure Centre (just not in the Lucky Prawn Bistro area)
  • The Grifter Brewing Co
  • Kicks Brewery
  • Mixtape Brewing and Bar
  • Sauce Brewing Co
  • Wildflower Brewing & Blending
